Abstraction makes simple visual information become an experience for the viewer in generating a sensation of emotions through reflective thought and examination of the form; without the need for a narrative. Certainly, these abstract forms can be both simple and complex imagery and may be expressive or reflective of real life experiences, while not being representational. I generate a visual system of shapes that have a personal underlying meanings, emotions, and narratives; but ultimately that personal narrative or content is not what the work is about. While the works are personally meaningful and significant as they derive out of my life experiences, my aim is not to communicate that personal narrative directly. The content of the works remain ambiguous to the viewer; but the viewer instead will optically experience the arrangement of colors and shapes. The viewer will experience the space in relation to shape, color, and value as I force the viewer to move through the space.
In my ceramic works, I create figures involving simple forms and color. The gesture of the piece is what creates the expression. Through an investigation of forms I produce multiple sculptures that portray quirky figures that are meant to be shown in relationship to each other. These art forms have unlimited potential. Like all visual art, abstraction communicates to the viewer when words are inadequate.
